She did it!
She Did It!
She did it!
I’ve been worried about this day for years.
But, she did it!
When she was little we didn’t understand her struggles. Therefore, it was easy to get frustrated. Why wouldn’t she just comply? Haircuts, dentists, eye appointments… all significant triggers that caused trauma.
Simple things turned into major events.
It took a beat for me to let go of my expectations and allow Betsy to be Betsy. And to stop worrying that our experiences were not typical. I needed to allow her to show up fully.
She did it! – Gratitude
I’m grateful for the road we’ve taken with her.
It’s been different (what else is new?). In other words, Organic… Fluid… and led by inspiration.
If you are a parent you know how individual your children are. They don’t all have the same path.
I’m grateful for the freedom we have to raise Betsy. The way that is best for her.
Her Own Best Advocate
One of the most important lessons I want her to learn is that she is her own best advocate.
I want her to know that first, it’s okay to ask questions. Second, it’s okay to speak up. Third, it’s okay to ask for what you need. And fourth, it’s okay to say No.
In the past, we had a few unexpected experiences when she was younger. At the time I didn’t know what to teach. And it still haunts me.
Beautiful
But today was beautiful.
Partway through getting her braces on, she held up her hand. And in a stressed, anxious voice declared, “I need a hug!”
Everyone stopped. She sat up and I gave her a hug. I just held her for a minute as her body shook.
My girl was able to pause and relax and recenter.
She experienced a lot of new sensations and noises today.
But. She did it.
My girl communicated. She was respected, and she made it through.
I pray that as she continues through life. These are lessons she carries with her.

Hi! I'm Amy Earle
When I was a kid I was obsessed with government and history. I was sure I’d be a high school history teacher. Instead I chose to homeschool my own children. Soon after beginning, I was introduced to the principles of leadership education and the importance of teaching children how to think, instead of simply filling them with what to think. This led me on a journey that changed everything for me. We’ve gone the path less traveled and it has made all the difference.
